Ok so Facebook. Nothing new, pobably been covered in many blogs many times before, but as this is my blog here we go again.....
I want to start off by saying that as a social networking tool facebook does exactly what it says on the tin. What I want to talk about is what comes with owning a facebook account.
So the first thing is the people. Friends on face book are meant to be just that.."friends". I guess you could include this as people you knew from school, the past in general, people you've not seen for a while, but all in all there people you got on with at one time or another. Why is it then that people take it on themselves to add others knowing full well they would have gunned them down in the street in the past rather than giving there hand a shake, but yet when it comes to chalking up another friend your suddenly fair game.
The audacity of these people is unbelieveable. "Hi I used to make your life a living hell back in the day, but hey I know you so I think that warrants you adding me?" Who are these people? Do they think that just because time has passed that all is forgotten and they're no longer a cock? Do they think that because they have a family they must be less of an irritation now? Sometimes even more frustrating are the people who once maybe met you in the bus stop down the road because your bus was late and assume that qualifys them for a place on your profile page and a +1 on theirs.
In my humble opinion Facebook sometimes to a certain extent makes a mockery of what a friend is all about. Really Friends should be renamed to Contacts. I'm a lucky guy from the friends I have and I'm pround to be theres so why pollute such a big part of our lives, taint the taste of friendship and turn it into a game of "I have more than you!"
The other thing that I wanted to talk about was Facebook apps/games. Yes I'm on facebook to find people I lost contact with from MY past, my past that I want to remember, but anyway I digress.....Facebook applications. I'm not on there to see which one of the Waltons I am or to join in on gangsta warefare nor do I want to know how hard I can virtually kick someones ass. I don't want to take a test on Dallas and I don't need a screen telling me my favourite colour, but I guess I'm on my own as many people seem to like these things, but I'm befuddled to know why.
At it's core facebook is a great site and I've enjoyed speaking to many people from my past it's just the needlessness of alot of the baggage that comes with it. It feels like a M$ OS that needs to lose some weight, but I'm sure I don't speak for the masses if a look on my home page is anything to go by and besides you can always click ignore.
